RESUMO

INTRODUCTION: Gluten enteropathy (celiac disease) is a chronic disease and presents as diarrhea, weight loss and anemia. CASE PRESENTATION: A 35-year-old Caucasian man with gluten enteropathy, familial multiple lipomas and seborrheic keratosis was seen in our clinic. After confirmation of the diagnosis, he was advised to follow a gluten-free diet. His clinical improvement was evaluated and confirmed with biopsy. CONCLUSION: Celiac disease is known to be associated with many systemic diseases and skin lesions but its association with familial multiple lipomas has not yet been reported.

RESUMO

We present three obese patients with symptomatic lumbar epidural lipomatosis. All three were treated with a calorie-controlled diet and considerable weight reduction was achieved. MRI demonstrated a reduction in the epidural fat and relief of thecal sac compression in all three; two also improved clinically.

RESUMO

An obese patient with bilateral sciatic pain had epidural lipomatosis on magnetic resonance examination. Treatment that used a weight-reduction program eliminated the symptoms, and after magnetic resonance imaging, revealed reduction of the lipomatosis deposits.

RESUMO

The case reported concerns an obese patient suffering from lumbo-radicular intermittent claudication due to lumbar epidural lipomatosis. Compression was revealed by magnetic resonance imaging which showed the existence of a hypersignal in weighted sequences in T1 situated in the epidural space and narrowing the dural sheath. Three cases of lumbar epidural lipomatosis related to obesity have already been described. Treatment in all three was surgical with the result assessed as good in one case and poor in two. The interest of the present case is demonstration of the cause and effect relationship between epidural lipomatosis and obesity as shown by complete restoration of the epidural space after a calorie-controlled diet, and the possibility of successful treatment by this technique.

RESUMO

Pelvic lipomatosis is a disease of dense infiltration of benign fatty tissue within the confines of the deep bony pelvis. A case is reported of an obese, hypertensive, thirty-nine-year-old black man with the typical clinical and radiographic features of pelvic lipomatosis. Prolonged fasting produced an extensive weight loss and profound resolution of his presenting symptoms, signs, and radiologic abnormalities. Subsequent regain of weight resulted in the reappearance of the disorder, confirming that pelvic lipomatosis may be a disease of accelerated and excessive fat deposition which can be reversed by dietary restriction. The literature pertaining to pelvic lipomatosis is reviewed in detail.
